La
Herradura
La Herradura is a small, lovely village located on the tropical
coast of Granada. What was once an old fishing village is
now a village of quaint Spanish restaurants and small friendly
bars but still retains the feel of a fishing village. It
is increasingly being discovered by the discerning tourist.
Our beautiful La Herradura bay, surrounded by mountains
is the perfect place to spend a relaxing vacation and learn
our language. The simple attitudes and natural friendliness
of the people will make you feel very at home.
The
laid back attitude of the local people is reflected in the
number of parties that are celebrated here – ‘fiestas’
such as: - Las Cruces de Mayo - The Crosses of May, held
during the first weekend of May - with floral decorations
and dancing in the streets; Las Fiestas del Carmen –
Festival of the Virgin – take part or just watch the
procession of boats on the Mediterranean, with lots of wonderful
fireworks; San Jose – Saint Joseph is the patron of
the village of La Herradura and his day is celebrated with
Fairs, Street attractions and partying. And last but not
least is the night of San Juan when all people, young and
old, build bonfires on the beach and party till dawn - bathing
in the waters at midnight is a very old tradition and participation
is encouraged.
La Herradura
is situated less than one hour from two of the most important
and well visited Andalusian cities, Malaga and Granada.
With its privileged position and its favourable climate,
La Herradura is in a perfect location for enjoying all sorts
of activities: water sports, tennis, horse riding and countryside
excursions. It is a very beautiful and colourful coastal
area of Spain growing a large variety of tropical fruit,
such as bananas, avocados, custard apples (a local delicacy)
and mangoes.
The
Weather
More
than 320 sunny days each year and an average annual temperature
of 20º Celsius make Granada’s Tropical Coast
a heavenly enclave. Light winds from North Africa, the warm
waters of the Mediterranean and the shelter provided by
the nearby peaks of the Sierra Nevada give it Europe’s
only subtropical microclimate with an average temperature
in Spring of 22ºC, in Summer, 32ºC, in Autumn,
22ºC and in Winter, 20ºC.
The ocean temperature varies depending on the waters rushing
from the Atlantic through the strait of Gibraltar and average
between 24ºC in Summer and 17ºC in Winter.
